Catherine Ford was born Bloomsbury in London. Because her father had left the family of Ford, they were looked after by her mother, grandmother, and godparents. Ford was suffering from anxiety disorder caused by the word association when she was a toddler. Ford's passion for acting started as a child. Ford joined in the National Youth Theatre. Ford was accepted into the Sylvia Young Theatre School. However, after a short period of days, she concluded that this school wasn't for her. Ford applied instead for admission to the Central School of Speech and Drama and finally won a position on her fourth try. Shaun Dingwall - who later was the character Pete Tyler in Doctor Who was also one of Ford's classmates. Ford was not able to complete her degree in 1993. However, in 1991, Ford had made her first television appearance on the show Surgical Spirit. At that time, Ford adopted the stage name Catherine Tate. Tate appeared in programs on television including The Bill, Men Behaving Badly, and London Burning. Her regular work in theatre has led to her joining The Royal Shakespeare Company, for the 2000-2001 Season. Tate was recognized as a stand-up comedian and became part of her portfolio in the year 1996.
